Respirology

A respirologist is a physician who specializes in diseases of the respiratory tract. This includes the lungs, airways (mouth, nose, pharynx, larynx, and trachea), pleura and respiratory muscles.

Respirologists can treat a wide variety of respiratory diseases and disorders, including  both acute and chronic conditions such as : asthma, chronic bronchitis, emphysema, chronic obstructive lung diseases (COPD), pneumonias, sleep apnea disorders and lung cancer. He may perform pulmonary function tests, bronchoscopies or biopsies in order to help with the diagnosis and treatment of the patient

Gastroenterology

A Gastroenterologist is a physician with dedicated training management of diseases of the gastrointestinal tract and liver.

Gastroenterology is the study of the normal function and diseases of the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon and rectum, pancreas, gallbladder, bile ducts and liver. It involves a detailed understanding of the normal action (physiology) of the gastrointestinal organs including the movement of material through the stomach and intestine (motility), the digestion and absorption of nutrients into the body, removal of waste from the system, and the function of the liver as a digestive organ. It includes common and important conditions such as colon polyps and cancer, hepatitis, gastroesophageal reflux (heartburn), peptic ulcer disease, colitis, gallbladder and biliary tract disease, nutritional problems, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), and pancreatitis. In essence, all normal activity and disease of the digestive organs is part of the study of Gastroenterology.

Internal medecine

Internal medicine physicians, or internists, are specialists who apply scientific knowledge and clinical expertise to the diagnosis, treatment, and compassionate care of adults across the spectrum from health to complex illness. They are especially well trained in the diagnosis of puzzling medical problems, in the ongoing care of chronic illnesses, and in caring for patients with more than one disease. Internists also specialize in health promotion and disease prevention. General internists are equipped to handle the broad and comprehensive spectrum of illnesses that affect adults, and are recognized as experts in diagnosis, in treatment of chronic illness, and in health promotion and disease prevention

Internists routinely see patients with conditions such as heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, obesity, chronic kidney disease, rheumatologic disorders, and chronic lung disease.

General surgery

The general surgeon is responsible for a wide variety of conditions requiring surgical intervention. These include disorders of the breast, thyroid, stomach and intestines. General surgeons treat a wide variety of major and minor colon and rectal diseases including inflammatory bowel diseases, colon and rectal cancer, gastrointestinal bleeding and hemorrhoids. They perform the majority of all non-cosmetic breast surgery from lumpectomy to mastectomy, especially pertaining to the evaluation, diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer.

Laparoscopy is a relatively new minimal access surgical techniques using cameras and small instruments inserted through 3 to 15mm incisions. Gallbladders, appendices, and colons can all be removed with this technique. Hernias are also able to be repaired laparoscopically. The benefits of doing surgery laparoscopically is  to reduce wound complications, blood lose, and shorten recovery time in patients. General surgeons that are trained today are expected to be proficient in laparoscopic procedures.
